No Leads On The Cause Of Sea Isle's 7 Alarm Fire

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. - The investigation into the massive shore fire that ripped through several homes in Sea Isle City has wrapped up for the day.

But 24 hours later, there are still more questions than answers about what happened.

Three building are a total loss, while another 11 homes have varying levels of damage, including heat and smoke damage.

The residents surrounding are still not allowed back in their homes tonight.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before," witness Sarah Schmader said.

One of the five units destroyed was going to be a retirement home for Carl and Lynn Rodriguez.

They came to Sea Isle City Saturday afternoon to try and see their place for the first time since it burned down.

“We got as close as a couple blocks away, and my understanding is there is nothing left right now," Carl Rodriguez said.

They said their neighbors were home when the flames erupted.

They got out safely, but the fire burned out their car.

“This was their first weekend down all winter, they just got down. They said they saw contractors next door and about a half an hour, hour later police were banging on their door to get out," Lynn Rodriguez said.

Fire investigators and police spent the day interviewing witnesses and searching for evidence.

They didn’t have much luck.

“We are no closer to finding a cause or origin at this point. It’s still actively being investigated," Lt. Thomas McQuillen said.

One thing that didn’t go up in smoke is the Rodriguez’s optimism.

They said they’re fully insured, and plan to rebuild in time for the sunset of their lives.

“I’m just glad it’s not full summer season, it could have been different circumstances if it was the middle of the summer. There weren’t too many people down here, that was a good thing," Lynn Rodriguez said.

Investigators will take the day off Sunday for the Easter holiday, but will be back out again Monday morning, with hopes of pinning down exactly what caused this destructive fire.
