4 safe, dog killed after 2 homes catch fire

PHOENIX -

An intense scene Friday morning at a Phoenix home where crews pulled a man in a wheelchair from a burning home.

"My chest kind of burned," said Adela Aiello.

Adela Aiello escaped just in time, helping a man she lives with who is also in a wheelchair escape a burning fire.

Aiello and the man lived in the front house of the property, the fire starting in the back house and spreading.

"This man, he went to the room, and we don't have electricity. So he lit a candle, and he goes to sleep outside," she said.

"The unique thing about this house is it's divided, there's two homes in one which made it worse, so we had to search the front side and back side simultaneously," said Larry Nunez with Phoenix Fire.

Both homes were damaged in the blaze.

"There was quite a collection of items in there around the beds and around the hallways. It's a small spot so whatever they owned it's all stacked in those bedrooms," said Nunez.

A tough job for crews, just about everyone, made it out okay, one of Adela's dogs did not survive the fire.

The residents of the house believe the candle started a fire in the back house.
