Elimination diet may help you find source of problems

Posted: Updated:

The elimination diet is not about losing weight. It's about trying to pinpoint the possible source of health-related problems, such as digestive issues, headaches, and allergies, according to Lisa Cohn is a nutritionist and owner of Park Avenue Nutrition in New York City.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, the host of "The Dr. Oz Show," recommends creating meals around non-citrus fruits, green veggies, nuts, seeds, chicken and fish while avoiding soy, dairy, gluten, wheat, and even eggs.

After you cleanse your body for a few weeks, you slowly reintroduce the food groups into your diet, and see how you feel.

It's a diet that's about eating in a way that makes you feel good, and a lot of people are doing just that.

Most grocery stores, like Fairway Market on the Upper West Side, have gluten-free and organic sections. And eating healthier does not have to put a strain on your budget.

"People at this point are spending much more than they think on processed foods, fast foods, even getting a quick lunch and buying it outside could be double or triple if you made it at home," Cohn said.

She added that when you reintroduce foods, juices and smoothies are easier on the stomach. She said working with a nutritionist when you are eliminating is helpful.

"So we can communicate what's real about your life and what's going to allow you mentally to be committed to what is going to give you success," Cohn said.

The goal is to feel better. And you may even lose weight in the process.
