Man Says He Was Kicked Out Of Basketball Game Because Of HIV

Posted: Updated:

A 21-year old Kissimee man says he was thrown out of a basketball game because he is HIV positive.

Dakota Basinger plays in the "Florida Dream Sports League" which is sponsored by the City of Kissimmee.

Basinger says during a playoff game Sunday he was removed from the game by an employee of the park and was humiliated.

"He said I know this is personal question but are you HIV positive? I said yeah, why? He said something about a lawsuit could be brought against them or something about that and he basically said I wasn't allowed to play the rest of the season,"

Officials say the part-time employee that took this action is still currently employed by the city.

A spokesperson says this incident is under review and released this statement:

"On Sunday, April 13th, 2014, a part-time Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities employee with the City of Kissimee acted independently and without supervisor approval when he removed a participant from a city recreational basketball game due to a medical condition. The city has taken corrective action to ensure this does not happen in the future."

City officials now say Basinger is welcome to play in any sports league that the city offers.
