NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Thousands of police officers lined Beach 84th Street in Rockaway Beach, Queens, to say a final goodbye to one of their own and salute his heroism and sacrifice.

Police Officer Dennis Guerra, 38, died from smoke inhalation after rushing to a fire in Coney Island high rise on April 6.

Deputy Inspector Carlos Valdez, Guerra's commanding officer, said the 8-year veteran will be remembered for his dedication to helping others.

Helicopters from the NYPD's Aviation Unit flew in a tribute formation over St. Rose of Lima Church.

Mayor Bill de Blasio shook the hands of police officers and attended the funeral mass with his wife, Shirlane McCray.

Police Commissioner William Bratton spoke with some of the officers outside the church.

The coffin carrying the body of Officer Guerra was draped in the NYPD flag. The priest blessed the coffin with holy water. The flag was given to his grief-stricken wife, who was surrounded by their four children.
