A body was found in a ditch right in front of a Taco Cabana restaurant in north Austin.
Jiffy Lube employees say they knew the victim. He had panhandled in this area for the past several years. But when they came to check up on him this afternoon... His body was found in this ditch.
Police say they responded to the corner of West Parmer Lane and the North Mopac Expressway around 1:20 p.m.
Shortly after, the victim described as a white male in his early 50's, was pronounced dead. Inside the ditch there was some standing water from the rains this morning, but at this point officers are not sure if that played a role in the death. It is unknown how long the body had been lying out there.
A scooter was found nearby, which Jiffy Lube employees say was owned by the victim. At this time the death is being investigated as suspicious.
"You know just finding somebody in a ditch out here is not going to be a normal place for anybody. So I think they are just considering suspicious until they get any further details and work on their investigation a little more. Naturally they are going to be checking the area, talking to any potential witnesses in the area who may have seen this person or looking for any surveillance cameras that may have been around here to see if they captured anything that might have happened," APD Cpl. David Boyd said.
The cause of death is still unknown. The medical examiner will be doing an autopsy to determine whether this will be considered a homicide or not.
