Cardinal George finishes cancer treatment

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago's Cardinal George finished his chemotherapy treatment a few weeks ago. His doctors will continue to conduct regular tests.

Recently, the archbishop said he was taking steps to protect his health during Holy Week while he continued his cancer treatment.

While he celebrated Palm Sunday Mass, he told worshippers he won't be able to greet parishioners at the door after the services as he normally does.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported he also didn't serve communion and remained seated while he delivered his homily.

George said he had been advised not to shake hands with "huge numbers of people this week."

The 77-year-old is the spiritual leader of Chicago's more than 2 million Roman Catholics.

George survived bladder cancer eight years ago and was diagnosed with urothelial cancer in 2012. He recently canceled a trip to Rome, saying he was worried about his weakened immune system.
