Allergy Season Expected To Be Harsh, Experts Say

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It seems like this weather was a long time coming.

Spring is finally here, the cherry blossoms and flowers are blooming, but that means dreaded allergies are also raging.

Sunday was the perfect day to stop and smell the flowers

Fox 29's Sabina Kuriakose reports.

"It's really been a long winter. I think everyone's just glad to be out," Aaron Dilliplane from the Japan American Society said.

Experts say this spring is set to be one of the worst seasonal allergy seasons; thanks to that brutally cold winter.

"When you get mold, and you get all of these trees releasing pollen. You just create havoc with people, you end up have tremendously high numbers of pollen in the air," Fox 29's Dr. Mike Cirigliano said.

Dr. Mike says pollen levels are extreme throughout the country right now, which can be a nightmare.

The best thing to do?

"You want to stay in closed areas, make sure you have air conditioning, make sure that you have air purifiers in the house." Dr. Mike said.

Of course, you have to leave the house sometime. According to Dr. Mike, it's important to prep with allergy medicines, such as over-the-counter pills and nasal spray antihistamines.

This is only the beginning, Dr. Mike says you should expect a long allergy season this spring, and as always prevention is easier than a cure.
