Austin ISD Police have issued a citation against the father of the student who brought a gun to Webb Middle School two weeks ago.
Fernando Reyes, 43, was cited Friday for making a firearm accessible to a child, which is a class c misdemeanor. AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez says the pistol was in Reyes' toolbox and that's where his child got it from.
The .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol had five rounds inside when police found it on campus.
Last week, five students were detained on campus for their involvement with the weapon. Some were charged for weapons places prohibited and some for trying to hide the gun and others for failing to report the weapon.
Their cases are in the hands of the Travis County District Attorney's Office.
Mendez urges parents who have weapons to keep them out of their children's reach.
"Under state law if you're a gun owner you have to keep your gun secured from minors or you have to have them locked away or where a child cannot have access to it, " said Mendez.
The citation carries up to a $500 fine. Mendez says the father was cooperative once he realized it was his weapon.
