PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A man is behind bars, accused of stabbing his own mother -- not once or twice, but nine times.

She survived the attack and now her son is telling investigators a higher power made him do it.

All this happened in front of many witnesses who were able to pull the suspect away from his mother and called for help.

Police say 18-year-old Cory Kit Montgomery attacked his mother around midnight Tuesday.

"She was screaming.. 'Stop.. you are my son.  Stop stabbing me,' That is what she was saying," said Reyna, a witness.

Reyna called 911 while others tried to pull the suspect off of his mother.

"It looked like he was socking her at first, but when I got closer, I saw the knife," said Reyna.

She first saw the suspect attacking his mother in a parking spot at an apartment complex near 23rd Street and McDowell in Phoenix.

According to court documents, police claim Montgomery stabbed his mother nine times with a kitchen knife and admitted to the crime.  They also say he told officers God had told him to do it.

"When she was saying, 'Please stop.  I am your mom.' He just said, 'No. You are not. No you are not," said Reyna.

The witness' cousin also tried to stop the suspect by hitting him with a rock.

"I hit him and he just took it and looked at me like nothing happened.  I couldn't believe it.  I was really scared.  I couldn't believe that this guy took a rock in the face and it didn't do nothing to him.  He took it like it was a normal punch or something," said Anthony Huggins.

Police arrested Montgomery as he was trying to get away.  His mother remains hospitalized.

"I just thank God I was out there to save her 'cause when I saw her after he was done.  I don't think she could have handled any more stabbing," said Reyna.

Montgomery was booked for resisting arrest and attempted murder.  A judge set his bond at $500,000.
