Craters open up on roadway after water main break in NW Austin

Posted: Updated:

Three craters opened up near the intersection of Northland Drive and RM 2222 early Wednesday morning after a water main break in the area.

At around 4:00 a.m., sections of the roadway began lifting up and gallons of water started pouring out after a 20-inch water main broke, according to Austin Police.

Utility crews are still working to find out exactly where the break occurred and how it happened.

Environmental crews were also on the scene to ensure that the leak would not affect local creeks.

The Austin Police Department closed down the westbound lanes of RM 222 between Parkcrest Drive and the southbound ramp to MoPac Expressway due to the damage on the roadway and large pools of water still in the area.

The intersection of RM 222 and Balcones Drive has also been closed to traffic.

Authorities say drivers should expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
