Chicago area youth counselor`s rap song featured on `Mindy Project`

A Chicago area youth counselor spends a lot of time with troubled teens but his real passion is music. Recently, that local rapper's work was featured on the TV show, "Mindy Project."

"I like a hard working woman. So that's the kind of woman and appeals to me---hardworking---independent who can take care of her own--and don't depend on anybody for anything," Howell says.

Mav says that describes his mother and sisters, who all raised him in the projects on Chicago's West Side. His big sister Cortisa Howell was his inspiration for his song "Walk That."

Whatever she did, he says, he did – including graduating from The University of Illinois. She died in 2010 after a long bout with cancer, leaving behind two children.

To honor her memory, Mav says his lyrics have to be uplifting.

One of the "Mindy Project's" producers heard about the song on YouTube, liked it and featured the audio--because of the positive lyrics.

Mav says the producers called him last week to let him know that his work was going to be on tonight and to keep it a secret until last night---when he tweeted it out to his followers and his mom.

"I was extremely happy," he says of the television exposure. "It's the first time one of my records will be featured on television and I think to my understanding I might be the first unsigned Chicago artist to have my music featured on prime time television."

The producers tell Mav he's getting paid for his tribute to his sister and mother. He's taking his family out to dinner and waiting for his next turn in the spotlight.
