NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It was opening day at Yankee Stadium on Monday. First pitch was at 1:08 p.m. with the New York Yankees taking on the Baltimore Orioles in the Bronx.

It was the last home opener for shortstop Derek Jeter who will be retiring at the end of the season.

Jeter, who played just 17 games last year due to injuries, missed last year's opening day with the Bombers. His first home opener was back in 1996.

Former players Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte were on hand to reunite with Jeter as the "Core Four." Rivera and Pettitte threw ceremonial pitches to Posada and Jeter.

The Yankees defeated the Orioles 4-2.

"I don't want to jinx anything but it felt really good," Jeter said. "It felt like maybe my first home opener. It was a fun time for me."

After the game, Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced that closer David Robertson, who did not pitch Monday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
