Teen's tank top made others too uncomfortable at Planet Fitness

Posted: Updated:
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - A Michigan teen is calling out Planet Fitness' "judgement free zone", saying employees there gave her a hard time when she went exercising in a tank top.

Allison Roth, 17, says she usually wears a T-shirt to the franchise on Highland Road in Waterford Township. She says she goes nearly every day to get in shape for lacrosse.

When the cold snap finally broke this week, she wore a tank top to the gym instead.

"I was walking to go get water [at the gym] and a lady came up to me and she said that the tank top I was wearing was making others feel uncomfortable, and they could either give me a shirt to wear or I could leave," Roth tells FOX 2's Andrea Isom.

Roth was upset by what she was told, so she left the gym and has since canceled her membership.

Roth's mother says she approves of the shirt and that Roth's grandmother even bought it for her.

But rules are rules - but what exactly were the rules Roth signed up to follow when she purchased a membership?

Isom spoke with some other gym members and got mixed feedback. Some say they wear whatever they want, others say they were told at sign-up their outfits couldn't reveal too much skin.

Roth says when she and her mom signed up they were not informed about a dress code.

"This obviously isn't a judgement free zone and I'd like to spend my money elsewhere," Roth says.

Planet Fitness issued a statement saying: "Planet Fitness locations are owned and operated by individual franchisees. We have been made aware of this incident and we are looking into the situation."
