Study: Eating lots of fruits and veggies linked to lower death risk

Filling your belly with lots of fruits and vegetables has a significant health benefit and may even cut your risk of death, a newly publish study suggests.

Researchers looked at the dietary habits of tens of thousands of people living in England between 2001 and 2013 and found that folks who ate seven or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day had a 42 percent lower risk of death at any age than those who ate less than one portion a day, according to HealthDay News.

But it is important to note that the study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, doesn't prove that eating fruits and veggies directly cut your risk of death, only that the association between the two is strong.

A healthy diet rich in veggies, fruits, and berries -- which are natural sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber -- may indeed lower the risk of cancer and many chronic diseases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which provides a guide to using fruits and vegetables to help manage your weight.
