Extra police presence will be seen at Webb Middle School after AISD Police found a loaded gun on the campus yesterday.
A few parents picking up their children from after-school activities told FOX 7, they had no idea anything had happened.
Adalberto Jaimes was shocked once he came to pick up his 7th-grade son at school.
"They didn't let us know anything about it," said Adalberto Jaimes, a parent.
He says if his son's safety was at risk, something more should have been done.
"Campus lockdown until they find what they're looking for, or basically they have to call us," said Jaimes.
AISD Police say they received a tip just before 10 a.m. Monday that a Webb Middle School student was possibly in possession of a handgun.
"The information was starting to spread to other students, so some students came forward and told the assistant principal on campus," said AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez.
When officers arrived, they began their search to locate the student. But once they did, no handgun was found.
"Our police canines, that we have in our district to locate weapons were also used to search the campus. Through the investigation, through interviews and searches of the campus, we were able to locate a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol on campus hidden," said Mendez.
It was around 2 p.m. when the loaded pistol was found underneath a portable classroom behind the school. It had five rounds in it, but none in the chamber.
Officers say they felt comfortable allowing the school day to continue while students were interviewed and searches went on.
"We're still investigating exactly the purpose of the gun being on campus and confirming which student brought it onto campus. We have an idea of which student it was but we still have investigations to do, we still have other people to interview," said Mendez.
A parent letter was sent home by the campus and phone notifications went out Monday evening.
Jaimes says things need to change.
"They have to make sure to check the backpacks every time the kids are coming in because a pistol, or any type of gun, or explosive, could be here. They have to make sure everything is clear," said Jaimes.
A student who brings a handgun on campus can face a third degree felony. Whoever may have supplied the gun or had it readily available could face charges as well.
To address the situation, AISD says Webb Middle School will host a parent meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.
