Legislation would transform NYC's alternate-side parking rules

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Alternate side of the street parking is so important to New York City drivers that when you call 311 it's the first information delivered. After a mechanical broom or motorized sweeper cleans a street, drivers usually park on the cleaned street but have to sit in their cars until the street cleaning time period ends. That or get a $65 ticket.

Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, the head of the City Council Transportation Committee, wants to reintroduce a bill allowing drivers to leave their car as soon as a street is cleaned. He calls it common and financial sense for drivers.

Sanitation Department sources agree with Rodriguez that it makes common sense. But these same sources point out that because the number of inspectors has been reduced, those are the people who give out tickets to cars that refuse to move before a street is cleaned, it is not clear what this new law would do to street cleaning.

For local drivers who have to use alternate side of the street parking because of the cost of garaging cars, it makes a lot sense.

Rodriguez points out that reducing double parking is a safety issue and parking fines should not be used as a tax on working families of New York. The bill still has to go through council but seems to have enough votes.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
