Cardinal George to travel to Rome in April

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago's Cardinal Francis George plans to travel to Rome for the canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II next month.

The cardinal's schedule released Monday says he will be joined by a bishop and a group of pilgrims. The canonization will be April 27. The Archdiocese of Chicago says it plans a special Mass that same day in honor of the canonizations.

The 77-year-old is the spiritual leader of the archdiocese's more than 2 million Roman Catholics. George was released from the hospital earlier this month after being treated for dehydration and flu-like symptoms.

He recently started another round of chemotherapy due to the return of cancer near his right kidney. He survived bladder cancer eight years ago and was diagnosed with urothelial cancer in 2012.
