Vigil for held for murder victim Brittany Brown

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - Police are still searching for the cowardly killer who tied up a young woman and set her body on fire. A vigil was held Sunday for the family of Brittany Brown and her mother was there.

"It would take an insane person to do that much to a 125 pound girl," said the mother of Brittany Brown. She and dozens of other people gathered to cry out for justice for the 26-year-old found dead Saturday, March 22. Her body was discovered in an alley near Puritan and Wyoming. Police say her hands and feet were bound and her body was set on fire.

"We are watching this case and we are looking for resolution as expeditiously as possible," shouted activist Malik Shabazz.

The vigil was held to express outrage, show support for the family, pray and raise money to help pay for Brown's funeral and increase the reward for information leading to an arrest. Brown's family tells Fox 2 she suffered from mental illness. She left home February 14 but never returned. Those closest to her say she would sometimes turn to prostitution when she needed money.
Furious residents say it's time to stop the violence in the city, especially against women.

"This is it! This is it! No more!," one participant at the vigil shouted into our camera. "It's time for us to rise as a people, it's time for us to rise as a community, and it's time for us to rise as Detroit."

The activists and concerned citizens are working with Crime Stoppers to hand out fliers and get the sick person who did this to Brittany off the street. The young victim leaves behind two children. If you know anything about this crime, do the right thing and call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.

"You turn yourself in," a participant shouted. "Because you're not gonna be able to rest. You all are not gonna be able to rest until you do just that!"

The group raised $700 to help the family. Donations can also be made at the Heard and Taylor Family Funeral Home on West Grand Boulevard. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
