Facebook's drones, satellites and lasers plan

Facebook wants to beam countries, and people without Internet, into the future by using drones, satellites and lasers.

But when some people think of drones and satellites, don't they think of spying and privacy invasion, even environmental dangers?

Mark Zuckerberg posted a message on his Facebook page about the idea: "Our team has many of the world's leading experts in aerospace and communications technology, including from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research Center."

Both Facebook and Google are testing giant balloons using specialized antennas to deliver the Internet.

As for Facebook's drone, satellite and laser beam idea -- that could take a little while.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
