The Austin Police Department is making preparations to handle the large crowds expected in the city for this weekend's Texas Relays.
There will be events held throughout the day during the track and field competition, followed by celebratory events downtown at night.
In 2009, Highland Mall and a number of downtown bars closed their doors after security concerns arouse about public safety, and to avoid the crowds experienced in the years past. This year, APD says it has enough officers to deal with the foot traffic.
"Anytime we have a special event in the city of Austin that draws a large crowd, we always provide additional resources, police resources, to make sure the partygoers or the attendees are safe," said Lt. Vincent Hernandez with the Austin Police Department.
There will be some street closures throughout the weekend:
APD will not be conducting a no-refusal initiative this weekend, but says officers will be out looking for drunk drivers.
