The Texas Relays kicked off Wednesday and following the tragedy during South by Southwest, safety on Austin streets is a concern for many.
During the Texas Relays there are track and field events all day then parties set up at night.
Police say they have enough officers to handle the crowds and quickly respond to situations that may get out of hand.
Austin police have collaborated with the transportation department to come up with a plan that will allow traffic to flow despite having large crowds.
To ensure safety, there will be some street closures Friday evening to Saturday evening. East 6th Street between Brazos and the west frontage road of I-35 will be closed, as well as, the 500 and 600 blocks of Sabine, Red River, Neches, Trinity, and San Jacinto. Other downtown streets may close as needed.
Officers will be assigned to certain blocked intersections to make sure no one disregards them. This is the first big event in Austin since South by Southwest, where a suspected drunk driver drove through a barricade and into a crowd of people.
