Monument honoring Texas Vietnam Veterans installed at Capitol
The installation of a monument for Texas Vietnam Veterans was underway at the Capitol Monday.
The monument will be unveiled and dedicated on Saturday, exactly 41 years after the last American combat troops left Vietnam. More than 3,400 Texans died in the Vietnam War.
The Texas Legislature authorized the building of this monument back in May 2005. Since then, State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa worked to secure a $500,000 matching grant to fund the memorial.
"When we came back from Vietnam, we really felt unwelcome in our own home. Because there was a lot of hostility toward the war, there was a lot of controversy," Hinojosa said. "To me, this is a welcome home to all our Vietnam soldiers."
The monument dedication will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Texas Capitol. The event is free. The Texas Legislature has also declared March 29 to be "Vietnam Veterans Day."
