On Friday, 21 March 2014, U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman in Detroit struck down Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage, a decision that was enshrined into the State's constitution by voters in 2004. Archbishop Allen Vigneron, a signatory to a statement made collectively by the bishops under the name of the Michigan Catholic Conference, makes these additional remarks:

"As I said with my brother bishops in Michigan, marriage has come to us as a gift of God in establishing the order of nature. The Catholic community in southeast Michigan will continue to give witness to the truth that marriage is between one man and one woman, which is the foundation for the flourishing of society."
