For the first time in 11 years, an infant in Travis County has died of whooping cough.
The Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services Department says the illness, also called pertussis, usually starts with cold-like symptoms and maybe a mild cough or fever.
Many babies who get pertussis are infected by family members or others who may not even know they have it.
Last year, Austin-Travis County had 307 confirmed and probable cases of whooping cough.
So far this year, there have been 41 confirmed and probable cases.
