Uranium found in some Stamford water wells

MYFOXNY.COM -

If you get water from a ground well in Stamford, Conn., there is a chance you have uranium in it. It won't glow but long-term use could damage kidneys, especially in kids. The Stamford Department of Health has collected samples of water from 60 underground wells and found 42 had uranium in the water. Nearly 1 out of 4 of the tested wells had unhealthy levels of uranium.

It is OK to wash in the contaminated water, but Stamford residents should not drink the water or brush teeth with it.

The uranium is naturally occurring in the bedrock. When Connecticut started testing for pesticides two years ago, someone suggested testing for uranium. Stamford has 5,000 water wells and hopes with publicity it can test 750 this year. Residents with water wells are urged to get the tests done and resident are starting to sign up.

If the well water contains uranium, only ion exchange or osmosis filters will remove it.

The Health Department recommends Stamford residents with wells to have their water tested once a year. Health officials point out that the department's $100 fee is one-third of what a private lab would charge, and you get a test for pesticides, arsenic and uranium.
