Austin City Council member Mike Martinez announced on Wednesday that he will throw his hat into the race to be Austin's next mayor on Saturday, April 5th. Martinez will announce his campaign in each of Austin's 10 new City Council districts.
In his announcement, Martinez said that the mayor's office needed "experienced leadership" to spearhead the big changes ahead for the city of Austin.
"As mayor, I will work with the new Council to ensure we hit the ground running and that geographic representation is successful and effective from day one," said Martinez.
Since first running for City Council in 2006, Martinez has supported a move to geographic representation. He voted as a City Council member to put the 10-1 proposal on the November 2012 ballot.
