Texas makes final push for insurance enrollment

HOUSTON (AP) - As a March 31 deadline draws near, Texas stands out among the nation's four most populous states for lagging behind on health insurance signups.

Nearly 1 in 4 Texans is uninsured, the highest rate in the nation. So the state's enrollment helpers are making a final, frenzied push to get people to buy policies.

But many of the uninsured say they won't participate in the new federal marketplaces, even at steep discounts.

Sara Rodriguez of Houston recently received a $4,000 bill for an emergency room visit to treat a fever. She says she can't pay it or afford $50 a month for insurance.

The federal government estimates that nearly 760,000 Texans could be eligible for coverage. California, New York and Florida have signed up far more people than Texas.
