Cuomo's new battle with de Blasio: charter schools

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appears to be shifting attention to his next battleground with the mayor of his state's largest city: charter schools. The pivot comes two weeks before the state budget is due.

Cuomo has seized upon the importance of these privately run but publicly funded charter schools after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ruled last month that three of them would lose their spaces in public school buildings.

Cuomo said Friday he feared such a decision endangered the future of charter schools. He wants more state control over the schools.

De Blasio upheld 14 of the 17 charter co-locations approved in the last days of his predecessor Michael Bloomberg's term.

Cuomo and de Blasio have also been clashing over funding for pre-kindergarten programs.
