Rodent issue may arrive when temps warm up

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago has been dealing with a rough winter. However, Ald. Bob Fioretti said that when temperatures warm up, the city could be dealing with an explosive rat population.

Fioretti is pushing for the Department of Streets and Sanitation to start utilizing ‘liquid rodent sterilization bait.' The chemical is called ContraPest. This technique is used in New York City and has worked very well so far in keeping the rodent population down.

Fioretti said he saw rats in the past week when temperatures went above freezing.

"I was going down Lake Street in the 1500 block and saw a whole crew of them scurrying into buildings. I saw them on the West Side yesterday doing my drive-around. I was up in the Gold Coast area and saw them. When you have that number of sightings in a limited period of time, we've got a problem," Fioretti said.

A recent article published in Animal Planet's magazine names Chicago as the "No. 4 city with the most rats."

"Yes, we've got all sorts of problems. But this affects the quality of life," Fioretti added. "We've got to be aggressive in our city. We're clearly not doing that. With this kind of winter, we haven't been able to bait."
