Con Ed: Only minor gas problems at buildings prior to blast

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Con Edison CEO John McAvoy joined the mayor and other city officials at a news conference Thursday to answer questions about the history of the gas pipe and claims by residents that they had reported smelling gas in the weeks leading up to the explosion.

Con Ed says the only reports it received were in May 2013 and in 2011. Those were minor customer equipment problems inside a building and repairs were made.

The FDNY checked 311 and 911 records for the past month and said there weren't any calls related to gas. The NYPD went as far back as 2010, and again: not a single call from the neighborhood in East Harlem.

Officials say the only call came at 9:13 a.m. Wednesday, just minutes before the explosion. It came from a resident of a building adjacent to the two that collapsed. Con Ed says if other people had called as they said they did the tragedy could've been prevented.

The utility company says it also routinely surveys gas mains during the winter because the freezing and thawing cycles can cause stress. The most recent survey in the neighborhood was conducted just two weeks ago.

Con Ed is also participating in the joint investigation to determine what caused the gas leak and ignited the blast.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
