PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two people were critically hurt in a crash Wednesday morning in west suburban Plainfield.

The three-vehicle crash happened about 10:40 a.m. at Route 59 and 119th Street, according to a release from Plainfield police.

Police said a vehicle heading southbound on Route 59 went through a snow-covered red light and struck a vehicle that was eastbound on 119th Street. The second vehicle careened off the road, striking a third vehicle that was stopped at the red light.

The drivers of the first and second vehicles were both hospitalized in critical condition, police said. The driver and passenger in the third vehicle were not hurt.

Route 59 was closed between 111th and 127th streets, and 119th Street was closed between Van Dyke and Naperville roads for several hours after the crash, police said. The intersection is open again as of 3:15 p.m.

Plainfield police are investigating.
