ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A wrong-way driver was killed in a five-vehicle crash in northwest suburban Arlington Heights on Monday afternoon.

The crashed happened about 12:15 p.m. when a 51-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet pickup northwest in the southeast-bound lanes of Rand Road between Thomas and Dryden avenues, according to Arlington Heights police.

The truck left its lane and entered oncoming traffic, narrowly missing several vehicles before striking a 2011 Volkswagen Golf, a 2002 Honda Civic, a 2001 Toyota Sienna and a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, according to a statement from police. The pickup then left the road, rolled over and came to rest in a driveway.

The wrong-way driver -- identified as Stanley Ksiazek of the 2000 block of Bayside Drive in Palatine -- was taken to Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge, where he later died, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Police said Ksiazek was also speeding at the time of the crash.

An autopsy Tuesday found Ksiazek died of multiple injuries from the crash and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office.

Another driver, a 48-year-old man from Vernon Hills, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition, police said. He remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.

Two other drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Tuesday afternoon the crash remains under investigation.
