3 teens charged with posting nude photos of Prince William Co. students on Instagram

WOODBRIDGE, Va. -

Computer harassment charges are rocking parts of Prince William County after police announced they have charged three teens with sharing nude photos of other students online.

Police say the suspects in this case are a 13-year-old boy who attends Stonewall Middle School, a 14-year-old boy in a county computer-based school program and a 15-year-old girl who attends Hylton High School.

Authorities say this trio opened several accounts on Instagram, and before those accounts were shut down, they had posted more than 50 photos of nude and partially clothed girls on social media for all the world to see.

Officer Jonathan Perok, a spokesperson for the Prince William County Police Department, says authorities began this investigation in mid-February after students who weren't involved contacted them, concerned about the photos they had come across. Police say the victims in the case willfully took the pictures, but did not know they were being used for this purpose.

"This encompassed a lot of students from various different schools in the county, so this was a widespread case," Perok says. "This is probably the first of this type we've had that involved as many students as it did."

One student, who spoke to FOX 5 while his mother looked on, said word quickly spread about the pictures.

"I just saw pictures of girls. They cropped the face out so you couldn’t see faces, but you saw body and body parts,” the student says. “Some were partially nude and some were nude. Everybody was posting on the profile -- you need to stop you could get criminal charges, but he or she didn't stop."

A school district spokesperson told us this happened off school grounds and on students own time and is really a police matter. School officials won't say what if any disciplinary measures were taken against these students. But police have charged each with one count of computer harassment. Penalties can vary since they are juveniles.

Officials also stress this serves as an important reminder about the need to talk with your children about internet safety.
