SXSW 2014 survival tips

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of year again. The South by Southwest Interactive, Film and Music festival has once again descended upon our city.

As with in the past, big-name and unknown music acts, celebrities, techies and thousands of out-of-towners are in Austin looking to enjoy all the festivities South by (for the initiated) has to offer.

Here are a few tips for surviving your SXSW experience:

  1. Make a schedule of the things you most want to do - There are SO many things to do, you can't possibly see or do it all. Pick out the things that really pique your interest.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes - There will be a lot of standing and walking, so having sore feet will put a serious damper on your enjoyment.
  3. Talk to the people around you - You don't want to be that guy or girl standing there being anti-social. Make some new friends. You might enjoy it.
  4. Recharge your devices - This is very important. There are ample places to recharge your batteries (literally and figuratively speaking). Take advantage of them. Bring spare batteries for your cell phone or other gadgets if you have them.
  5. Drink lots of water - It's hot in Austin (usually). You don't want to go getting yourself dehydrated in the midst of all the fun.
  6. Enjoy as much of the free food and drinks as you can - Not much more explanation needed here.
  7. Have fun - This is probably the most important tip. Take a day or two to just go out and see some cool musical acts or check out a movie screening, or visit the gaming expo. There are many options for ways to have fun. Treat yourself.

The interactive portion of the festival runs from March 7 - 11, the film portion of the festival runs from March 7 - 15 and the music portion runs from March 11 - 16.
