Upper Darby Police Officer Charged With DUI In Hit & Run

UPPER DARBY TWP. -

A man who answered the door at the home of Upper Darby Police Officer William Tobin said he wasn't available to talk. The officer is charged with Driving Under the Influence when investigators say he hit a car Tuesday night and kept going. It happened at the intersection of New Ardmore Avenue and West Chester Pike.

"The victim vehicle followed the striking vehicle around the block on Ferguson Avenue where the driver of the fleeing vehicle stopped. Our officers arrived and encountered Mr. Tobin behind the wheel of the striking vehicle," said Lieutenant Matthew Richter with Marple Township Police. Police say where Tobin finally pulled over isn't far from where he lives in Marple Township. They believe he was headed home when it happened.

"When he was asked what happened, he told our Sergeant at the scene he didn't know. There wasn't a heck of a lot of conversation. He appeared to be very obviously impaired where they couldn't even do field sobriety tests right there on the street," said Lieutenant Richter.

Tobin is 43-years old and a 19-year veteran of the force. Upper Darby Police say he has been out of work for several months after getting injured in the line of duty.

Tobin was arraigned Wednesday and released on his own recognizance.
