Adam Lambert to front Queen on U.S. tour

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The rumors were true: Adam Lambert and Queen are going on tour this summer in the United States.

"I've never played the Madison Square Garden before and to be asked by these two gentlemen to share the stage with them feels incredible," Lambert said Thursday, gesturing at original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor.

It's a full circle moment for Lambert. He auditioned for Season 8 of "American Idol" with a Queen song ("Bohemian Rhapsody"), then got to perform with them several times on stage, and now he's part of the lineup

"This is so surreal and I'm glad I sang that song for my audition because maybe it planted a seed," Lambert said.

So why do it?

"Roger needed the money," May joked.

The serious answer was that it was a natural progression after getting a massive response from their performances together.

"It's not like we're always looking for someone to sing for us. Organically this happened," May said.

It's a 19-date tour starting in Chicago mid-June and ending late July in Washington, D.C. They'll be at Madison Square Garden on July 17.

John Deacon from the original Queen won't be involved, but May and Taylor said he gives his blessing.

Adam of course will be taking on the vocals of the late Freddie Mercury. They're all aware that may make some fans wary.

"People are going to say to us, 'Is this really Queen without Freddie?' Well, I have no idea, I don't know what the answer to that question is," May said. "But people want to hear Queen music, they want to hear it done great, and they want to hear Roger and I play."

But they're confident Adam will win over critics.

"Each time we've worked with Adam with our music, he's just the most incredible front man," Taylor said.

With so many great Queen songs to choose from, they were asked how they could ever cherry pick a playlist. They wouldn't give away specifics but offered this reassurance.

"I've been to concerts where I often haven't heard what I want to hear so we're going to try to deliver that as well," Taylor said.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 14.
