Herbs, spices to combat specific illnesses

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Dr. Ed La Madrid,  acupuncturist and oriental medicine and wellness expert, says certain spices and herbs can help make you healthier. Many should be cooked with and added to foods to combat specific illnesses.

"A little bit every day is better than doing a mega dose when you need it," said Dr. La Madrid.

He broke down the specific herbs and spices and the health benefit each provides:

TURMERIC: anti-inflammatory, research with anti-cancer

GINGER: anti-inflammatory, immunity booster, stomach problems

PEPPERMINT: Relieves asthma, indigestion, IBS

CILANTRO: drains toxins and metals

ROSEMARY: Relieves anxiety, depression, asthma, improves breathing

BASIL: effective for stomach problems

CINNAMON: anti-inflammatory, sugar balancing

GARLIC: anti-viral, anti-biotic, anti-fungal, lowers blood pressure

To aid in digestion, try hot apple cider with ginger, clove, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and orange peel, says Dr. La Madrid.

In a pot, add 12 cups of apple cider add the herbs and let it cook for about four hours.

To be back on Broadway is a great time,” said Maroulis. The Brooklyn born New Jersey raised performer returned to the role he helped create this summer.
