Blaze at Detroit apartment complex labeled arson

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- Arson investigators say a fire that ripped through a Detroit apartment building, forcing some adults and children to leap from second- and third-story windows was set intentionally.

Detroit Fire Arson Chief Charles Simms says Wednesday's blaze at the Jason Manor Apartments has been labeled arson. Fire Commissioner Jonathan Jackson says an accelerant was found in the rubble.

Seven people were taken to hospitals and several others were treated for minor injuries.

How to help the victims of the massive Detroit apartment fire

Crews on Thursday were pumping water from lower-level apartments in the three-story building. Heavy equipment will be used to remove more debris. No deaths have been reported, but police cadaver dogs will search for possible victims.

Detroit police sources tell FOX 2 a man was served a personal protection order on Tuesday after threatening his ex-girlfriend, who lived at the apartment complex. He then texted her, "I know where you live." Out of fear, she decided to stay with a friend. Then, on Wednesday sources say she came back to the complex to find it engulfed in flames.

So, did this situation fuel the fire? It's one lead Detroit police are looking at, says FOX 2's Roop Raj.

Police were also called to the apartment building earlier Wednesday to deal with a disturbance at a party and a woman reported being sexually assaulted. It's not known whether that's related to the fire.
