$300K coming for trees on Belle Isle, across city

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- Detroit will see $300,000 from the U.S. Forest Service to help deal with dangerous trees on Belle Isle and across the city.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan on Thursday announced the grant, which will be used to remove dangerous trees on the island park and along city streets. The grant also will support a tree management, maintenance, and restoration plan that will include replanting trees.

Stabenow's office says the Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to work with groups such as the nonprofit The Greening of Detroit to coordinate, plan and implement tree restoration. The Greening of Detroit is starting a tree removal training program this spring.

The DNR last month took over management of 985-acre Belle Isle. It earlier cleared at least 160 hazardous trees at the park.
