Unplowed roads delay trash pickup in Inkster for weeks

Posted: Updated:
INKSTER, Mich. (WJBK) -

Neighbors along Meadow Circle in Inkster say their trash has not been picked up in three weeks because the garbage truck won't travel down their snowy, icy, unkempt road.

The next street over is cleared and residents along it have had their garbage collected. Those living on Meadow Circle say the street is a dead end, which is likely why it hasn't been plowed. Some say they have been parking on the other street to avoid the hassle.

They even received notices to clean up the mess of garbage or face a fine.

"I think we're just going to end up dragging it all the way down to the good street just to get it picked up," says Raymond Schondeld.

Republic Services is responsible for pickup and tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson they can't get through to do their job, saying it's partly an inaccessibility issue but also a safety issue.

Wednesday, becoming aware of the problem, the executive director of the Inkster Housing Commission, Tony Love, says it is the city's responsibility and called them personally.

"I just talked to the city manager and the director of public services, and we've agreed to coordinate and get the streets cleaned up today so trash can be picked up tomorrow," says Love.

Officials went door-to-door and asked residents to move their cars to the streets could be plowed. They also promised to plow five other streets frozen over.
