Eastpointe neighbors break up ice with pickaxe to get in driveway

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

The deep freeze and a lack of plowing in Eastpointe have turned side roads into ice rinks.

Cars have been wrecked, drivers have been stuck and for those like Dennis Randall it's been flat out unhealthy.

"That's a bad feeling when you miss dialysis, you're drowning in your own fluids," he says,

Randall says he missed a dialysis appointment because the people coming to pick him up couldn't get down his street, Chesterfield. The army veteran is upset that Eastpointe allowed this problem to fester and become a bigger, colder, more-dangerous one.

And he's not alone.

"One time it took me about 15, 20 attempts to turn in. The other time I was stuck in the street for about, easily, five, 10 minutes," says Josh Scott.

Neighbors say the ice ruts are so bad that avoiding on-coming traffic is very difficult. The Randalls also tell FOX 2's Randy Wimbley they spent hours breaking up ice with a pickaxe just to be able to get in their driveway.

"Six inches of ice. My brother broke it up and measured it, and it's about six inches thick," says Sarena Randall, daughter of Dennis.

Eastpointe's Director of Development Public Works and Services, Mary Van Haaren, says the city has received a lot of calls concerning the road conditions, and the department is concerned about the conditions, too.

She says the salt supply is exhausted and plowing a street with six inches of ice buildup is not possible.

Van Haaren says crews will take a second look at problem streets like Chesterfield and Manchester, but many won't be clear of ice until we experience a more permanent thaw.
