Tuesday's cold weather adds to record-breaking winter in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

(WJBK) -- Another winter day. Another winter record.

Tuesday morning's cold weather throughout the Detroit area set a record for low temperatures. Weather Authority Jessica Starr says the temperature at Detroit Metropolitan Airport dipped to zero degrees early Tuesday. That breaks the previous record low for March 4 of 5 degrees that was set in 1912.

On Monday in Flint, the National Weather Service says a record low for March 3 was set of 16 degrees below zero. The old record of 11 below was set in 2003.

Tuesday wasn't the only day of record-making in 2014. Here's a look at new record lows we've set this year:

- Jan. 6, 2014: -14 degrees
- Jan. 7, 2014: -14 degrees
- Jan. 28, 2014: -10 degrees

Weather Authority Derek Kevra says "Meteorological Winter" is the time between Dec. 1 and Feb. 28.  In that 90-day stretch we had:

  • Stuck below freezing 68 days. This is 76% of winter.
  • Been below zero 13 times... 4X more than it happens in an average winter.
  • An average temperature of 21 degrees. That's good for the 8th coldest winter ever (and coldest in 35 years).
  • 78" of snow... the second most ever.
  • Only 22 days with a temperature higher than average.
  • Kevra says we've also had 64 consecutive days with a snowpack of at least 1". The record is 74.

By Kevra's estimation, when you break winter down by hours in each day, we have spent roughly 80% of it below freezing.
