Officers ready to arrest those with outstanding warrants
Thousands of Texans woke up to a police officer at their door Saturday morning, ready to take them to jail. This initiative is all part of the Great Texas Warrant Roundup. Starting Saturday, more than 100 Austin Police Officer's along with 300 other law enforcement agencies in Texas began placing handcuffs on those with outstanding arrest warrants. The roundup will last until March 8th and targets the thousands of people who have tickets for traffic, parking, city ordinance, and penal code violations. Even though the roundup focuses on Class C charges; higher charge warrants will also be served. Austin Police say violators still have time to pay to avoid jail time. "Until they hear a knock on the door, or lights in their mirror, they have time to come down here. Who knows when or where that individual may come in contact with us, so to avoid situations like that for them and their family, we would rather have them come down here and take care of it themselves," Sgt. Richard Ellsworth, Austin Police Department. If you are unsure if you have a warrant you can call 311.
