Armed Forces Commissioned on USS Somerset

PENNS LANDING -

9-11 plane crash victims who died in Somerset County aboard Flight 93 will now be forever honored on our country's newest vessel.

Saturday our armed forces commissioned the USS Somerset in their memory.

Boy Scout Jeffrey Stecklein was only one when the United flight crashed in a field in Somerset County.

"It was very nice to volunteer for these people who have lost family members during this time," he said.

Stecklein passed out cushions to scores of people who came from all over for the commissioning of the USS Somerset.

The Homer family came to honor their brother, LeRoy, a co-pilot on the hijacked flight.

"He had just gotten married. He had a 10 month old baby. Very heartbreaking for him, his family and for us because we're a very close family," Monique Homer said.

Frank Guerra traveled from North Carolina to remember his granddaughter Deora Bodley.

The 20-year-old Santa Clara student didn't buy a ticket for flight 93, but ended up catching an earlier plane.

"We call her a hero because I know what those people on the plane, what they went through to try to take over that plane and what they did up there was really something," Guerra said.

Joan Burkholtz and her family wore buttons with their cousin Richard Guadagno, who died just before his 39th birthday.

"It just makes me very proud that he was able to do something to protect a lot of people," Burkholtz said.

As part of the ceremony, the ships cannons were fired.

"Today in the naming of this ship and the ceremonies of this day we commemorate the day America began to fight back," U.S. Senator (R-PA) Pat Toomey said.

"To the officers and crew of the USS Somerset, man this ship and bring her to life," sponsor Mary Jo Myers said.

Some of the last words heard on Flight 93, now serve as inspiration on our Navy's latest warship.

The USS Somerset will be open for the public to tour Sunday afternoon from one to four.

Then the ship will head to San Diego on Tuesday.
