Phoenix among cities vying for 2016 GOP convention

Washington, D.C. (AP) -

Three cities in the West and three in Ohio are among the eight finalists to host the Republicans' presidential nominating convention in 2016.

Party leaders will consider the Republican National Committee's list of potential host cities in the coming months.

The cities are Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, Kansas City, Mo., and three in Ohio - Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati.

The finalists largely represent swing states that will help decide the 2016 presidential election.

Arizona Republican Party officials say vetoed state legislation that would have allowed business owners to refuse to serve gays for religious reasons shouldn't impact Phoenix's chances of hosting the 2016 national convention.

Arizona GOP Chairman Robert Graham says the Republican National Committee's focus is on issues such as venues, transportation and security.

Graham says the outcry in the last week over Senate Bill 1062 shows that the state of Arizona is politically engaged.

Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed the bill, which sparked a nationwide furor and evoked calls for businesses to boycott Arizona.

Graham says representatives for the Arizona GOP, including former U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, and Phoenix will travel to Washington, D.C., Monday to present their bid.

The RNC already is considering several changes to its presidential selection process. GOP officials expect to hold their convention in the early summer of 2016, roughly two months sooner than has become the norm.

Democrats have yet to identify potential convention sites.
