Cause of Avonte Oquendo's death unknown

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner has not been able to determine how Avonte Oquendo died.

The office has listed both the cause of death and the manner of death as "Undetermined," according to a news release.

Oquendo, 14, ran out of his school in Queens on October 4, 2013, and vanished. Police, family, and volunteers searched for him for weeks before his body was pulled from the East River in January.

Oquendo had a form of autism that kept him from speaking. It is not clear why he ran away from school through an apparently open door. The Department of Education has said it is investigating so that something like this doesn't happen again.

His family has filed a notice of intent to sue the city.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
