Young DPD 'Chief for a Day' to be buried in uniform

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The 9-year-old boy who lived his dream of being Detroit's honorary police chief for the day while fighting leukemia has died.

FOX 2 has learned Jayvon Felton died Monday at Children's Hospital in Detroit. The fourth-grader was diagnosed with Leukemia in April.

Jayvon will be buried in his "chief for a day" uniform.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Saturday, March 1
Private viewing for family

Sunday, March 2
Public viewing 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
McFall funeral home (the location on Dexter in Detroit)

Monday, March 3
11 a.m. Service at Hartford Memorial church in Detroit will include a police escort and special service


Back on Jan. 31, Jayvon was dropped off at police headquarters by helicopter where he took the oath of office and held a news conference. He also met with emergency manager Kevyn Orr and deputy mayor Ike McKinnon.

"He was so happy that day. He was just so happy," Jayvon's mother tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson.

"Tremendous courage, tremendous strength - certainly that's a trait that we look for in our police officers, and so that's why I say to you that Jayvon is one of us. He is DPD," says Chief James Craig.

He says he plans on treating Jayvon Felton the way he would any fallen officer.
