Smoking regulation proposals increase in Illinois

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

How far is too far when it comes to regulating smoking? It seems just about every week, more regulations are being proposed for cigarettes and tobacco products in the state of Illinois.

The battle lines have been drawn. In Chicago and all over Illinois, smoking regulation is a hot button issue for business owners, politicians and private citizens.

There are currently proposals in Illinois to ban smoking on college campuses and in cars with kids. A Chicago condo building even banned smoking inside private residences recently.

Senator Ira Silverstein of the 8th district backs the proposal regarding smoking in the car with minors. The Democrat said it's the secondhand smoke people are worried about.

"I think people are becoming more aware how harmful secondhand smoke can be, especially minors, which I'm targeting now," Sen. Silverstein told Good Day Chicago. "Secondhand smoke in children causes bronchitis, asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), respiratory failure and cancer. The problem is that children breathe much more rapidly than adults and inhale more harmful chemicals per pound than adults do."
