Valuable items stolen from Canadian musician at O'Hare

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Harry Manx, a musician from Canada stopped at O'Hare Airport expecting to have the three guitars he brought with him, including his prized possession.

"My heart sank in the beginning," said Manx. "I asked the airlines about the third one and they said that they had put it on the belt. And so the idea started to sink in that somebody had taken it."

Manx filed a report with the Chicago Police Department.

Police said that they reviewed the surveillance video from that morning to find the person who stole Manx's guitar and another person's luggage. However, they are still looking for that person.

FOX 32 News talked to an expert who told us this is a prime example of how easy it is for a thief to walk off with your baggage.

"You look at the whole process of airline security, you just see there's sort of a gaping hole where people pick up their baggage. There simply aren't the systems or infrastructure in place," said Aviation Analyst of DePaul University Joe Schwieterman.

There isn't a lot of data out there to show how many bags or items are stolen every year.

According to the U.S. Department of transportation, although customer complaints were down in 2013, "mishandled baggage" meaning stolen, lost or delayed was up just a bit.

Another question though, who is to blame for stolen luggage?

"This is an issue that kind of falls between jurisdictions. Nobody really takes the heat when there's a rise. Obviously, the police, it's not their business to do positive bag check matches. The airport authority is saying this is the airlines delivering bags back to the people," said Schwieterman.
